The twenty-third edition of the IIHF World Women’s Championship is scheduled to take place in 2024. The top 10 teams will compete in the 2024 women’s world championship in New York from April 3–14. Starting on April 3 in Utica, New York, the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championship is one of the favorites to be won by the host, the United States of America.
This is the fifth time the United States has hosted the Women’s Worlds and the 23rd overall since the competition began in 1990. Three of the four previous hosting events have seen Canada win gold, but the most recent one, in Plymouth in 2017, was won by the hosts thanks to an overtime goal by Hilary Knight.
In the 2023 final, the Americans upset the host Canada 6–3 to capture their first championship since 2019. They are now aiming for consecutive victories to regain their supremacy.
Just three nations have ever advanced to the gold medal round of the competition’s 22 editions: Finland, with one silver medal finish, the USA, with ten, and Canada, with twelve world titles. These teams will probably challenge each other for the title of world champion once more; there has never been more interest in women’s ice hockey, though.

2024 IIHF Ice Hockey Tournament Format
In the preliminary round, the ten teams are split into two groups of five teams each. The top three teams from Group B and the five teams from Group A move on to the Playoff Round following a single round-robin series in each group. There will be a quarter-final match between A1-B3, A2-B2, A3-B1, and A4-A5.
The top-ranked team in the semi-finals is based on the following criteria: 1) Group Tier. 2) Group standings: the team with the lowest ranking semi-finalist will face off. The third-placed semi-finalist will face the second-placed semi-finalist.
The early game will be played by the host nation, if qualified, or, in the absence of that, by the highest-ranked semifinalist based on the previously established standards. The quarterfinal games will set the official time slots. The winners advance to the Gold Medal Game, while the losers take on the Bronze Medal Game in each Semi-Final match.
The losers of the quarterfinals will participate in knockout placement games. The fifth-place game-winner will be guaranteed a Group A seed for the following season. The remaining teams, which are ranked seventh through tenth, will be determined by three factors: 1. the preliminary-round record (1. points, 2. goal difference, 3. goals scored), 2. their placement within the group, and 3. the tiered group they participated in (A/B).
